Russian Hill Bookstore, established in 1974, is one of the last family-owned used and new bookstores in San Francisco. We began as Sunset Bookstore in 1974, a small used bookshop servicing the Sunset District west of 19th Avenue, and have been in continual operation for the past 43 years. Over the years Sunset Bookstore has since closed and merged with Russian Hill Bookstore, which has grown to become also the best note card shop in the city, and a favorite place for toys and games for children of all ages.
Russian Hill Bookstore is located at 2162 Polk Street, at the foot of Russian Hill, between Vallejo and Broadway Streets. Many are surprised to learn that we are open from 10:00AM to 10:00PM daily! Think of Russian Hill Bookstore as part of your evening out – a place to browse before or after dinner. You can find maps to our location on Yahoo and Google
Russian Hill Bookstore is a general used and new bookshop. We invite the book-hunter to search our shelves for that one book you’ve been looking for, or the one treasure you didn’t know existed. And if we don’t have what you’re looking for, we can try to order it for you. After all, you never know what you’ll find in a second-hand bookshop.
If you have books you want to sell or trade, we are always looking to buy, whether a single copy or a large library. There is generally a book buyer at the shop everyday, excluding Fridays. Please call the shop in advance for buying hours at 415-929-0997. Should you have too many books to bring into the shop, we are also one of the only bookstores left in the Bay Area that still does house calls.
Within our shop, you’ll find the largest selection of greeting and blank cards anywhere in the city. We carry hundreds of card lines, including cards from small, independent artists, many who are from the San Francisco Bay Area. We have cards you just won’t find anywhere else. Starting in October, be sure to come see our famous collection of Holiday cards and calendars.
Enjoy poking around the store, in nooks and crannies, to find treasures you didn’t know you wanted. Maybe just the right candle for tonight’s hostess or a picture frame for friend’s birthday. Boxes that look like books, dish towels covered in puppies, pens and journals for writing by hand – mugs, reading glasses, antiques, totes, pins, &c. These and much more are waiting for you to discover.
The Children’s Room is safely tucked away near the back of the shop. Here you will find an exciting collection of new, used, and vintage children’s books, as well as creative and educational toys, games, puzzles, plush, coloring books, and activity sets.
The board game corner is packed with old classics, like Backgammon and Clue, as well as the latest in strategy, co-operative, adventure, party, family and kids games. For on the go, you will find cross-word books and pocket travel games. Jigsaw puzzles and memory games. Recommendations are welcomed by our Game Master. He is usually able to order games and expansions we do not currently have in stock.
We are located on many walking routes for those exploring San Francisco history. When you go down crooked Lombard Street, or visit Holy Trinity Cathedral, or take a ride on the Hyde Street cable car, be sure to stop by Russian Hill Bookstore for San Francisco related books, cards and mementos to take home.
